Audiology Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: This session will allow attendees to discuss hot topics in Audiology in a town hall setting.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to describe two current events in Audiology.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss possible outcomes of events.
  3. Participants will be able to describe solutions for various outcomes of Audiology legislation.

  • Dora Murphy, AuD is currently the audiology prevarication representative for OSLHA. She received her doctorate degree from University of Cincinnati. She currently is employed at the Christ hospital in cincinnati.

Cultural & Linguistic Diversity (CLD) Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: The Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Caucus provides an open forum for members to discuss current pressing issues in the profession. The caucus will address: a) the use of evidence-based practice among members; b) resources to support evidence-based practice, and; c) ways in which members can collaborate to increase best practice clinical knowledge. Participants will also be given an opportunity to raise other issues for discussion.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to identify two/three ways evidence-based practice can be incorporated in their work setting.
  2. Participants will be able to identify two/three evidence-based resources to support best practice.
  3. Participants will be able to determine two/three ways members can collaborate to improve professional practice.

  • Kathleen L. Boltik, M.S., CCC-SLP, is currently employed by Akron Public Schools. She serves as the district’s bilingual SLP with expertise in cultural and linguistic diversity in the areas of assessment, therapy, RTI, and interpreter training. Kathleen is the current OSLHA Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CLD) Practice Representative.

Developmental Disabilities (DD) Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract:  The Caucus will be an opportunity for professionals in Ohio who work with the DD population to come together  to discuss current needs and issues of the population.  It is also an opportunity  to develop OSLHA’s action plan.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to name current topics and issues involving the DD population.
  2. Participants will be able to develop action steps for OSLHA regarding  the DD population.
  3. Participants will be able to define what the Governmental Affairs Coalition (GAC) is and validate the importance of the political Action Committee (PAC).

Caucus Facilitator:

  • Maggie Kettler, Au.D. is an Audiologist and Clinical Manager at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH. Dr Kettler specializes in diagnostics and treatment of hearing impaired children from birth-21 years old. She works with patients of varying ages and developmental needs. Dr Kettler is currently  a member of the interdisciplinary cochlear implant team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Healthcare Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: OSLHA’s Health Care caucus provides an open forum where the membership can identify important professional issues in the health care setting. This miniseminar will provide an in depth discussion regarding health care practice priority topics including documentation, Medicare changes/updates, reimbursement for services, IDDSI, technology and any other health care issues which may arise closer to the time of the OSLHA convention. The membership will be given the opportunity via an open forum to present a range of positions and generate suggested action plans and resource needs relating to OSLHA’s Health Care caucus at large.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to outline new and emerging Medicare and reimbursement related issues and their impact on practice.
  2. Participants will be able to gain knowledge related to documentation guidelines for successful documentation in health care fields.
  3. Participants will be able to participate and suggest resource needs for health care practice that may be facilitated by OSLHA.

Caucus Facilitator:

  • Dana Tingley, M.S., CCC/SLP is RVP of Operations for Healthpro-Heritage. She has extensive experience with providing leadership across multiple states/ clinical settings. Dana has provided comprehensive product design/training to support operations as well as implement training strategies and programs to optimize patient care and facilitate treatment efficiencies – including the areas of documentation, dementia, mild cognitive decline, care transitions, and mentoring SLPs.

Private Practice/Non-Profit Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: OSLHA’s Private Practice/Non-Profit caucus provides an open forum where pressing issues in the private practice and non-profit settings are addressed. This caucus focuses on maximizing third party reimbursement for services, identifying three issues and solutions within the Private Practice and Non-profit work settings, and increasing referral base through positive relationships with physicians and other agencies.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to identify 3 issues and resolutions for third party billing.
  2. Participants will be able to share 3 issues and successful strategies to keeping your practice “afloat”.
  3. Participants will be able to share successful strategies for increasing referrals and developing relationships with physicians and other agencies.

Caucus Facilitators:

  • Jacqueline Wolosiansky, MA CCC-SLP, has worked in private practice for 5 years with a primary focus in hospitals, acute rehab, and skilled rehab settings. She is currently pending Board Certification in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders as well as completing her final passes to be trained in FEES per ASHA guidelines with a plan to create her own business. Jacqueline is the current OSLHA Private Practice/Non-Profit Professional Practice Representative.
  • Sara Wolosiansky, MA, CCC-SLP is the owner and Director of Community Speech Services, Inc., a private practice in
    speech/language pathology. She has been in private practice for >25 years, and provides services for all ages. Community Speech contracts with local schools, hospitals, charter schools, adult group homes, and provides services to a range of clients
    on an outpatient basis.
  • Jill Linville graduated with her Undergraduate and Master’s degree from the University of Akron. She has over 25 years of experience working as a Speech and Language Pathologist at Community Speech Services, a private practice. She specializes in phonological/articulation and language disorders in the pediatric population. Jill also has extra training and experience with social language disorders and the high functioning autism population providing social language groups to all ages.

Schools Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: OSLHA’s Schools caucus provides an open  forum where pressing issues are addressed in the schools setting.This session will provide an .in-depth discussion regarding recruitment/retention of staff, advocating a workload approach in the schools and identifying concerns and  ideas for providing inclusion therapy services in the classroom.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to identify different ways to recruit/retain speech language pathologists in the school system.
  2. Participants will be able to identify different ways to advocate for a workload approach.
  3. Participants will be able to list different ways to target goals and provide therapy services in an inclusion based setting.

Caucus Facilitator:

  • Julianne Sommer, MA. CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist with the Trotwood-Madison City School District. She is the current ASHA SEAL for Ohio and the OSLHA Schools Professional Practice Representative.

Supervision Caucus

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: This caucus will provide the membership in-depth discussion of pressing professional issues regarding supervision
across settings. Issues/techniques regarding the supervision of students, new professionals, as well as supervisor training will be
presented. The caucus will discuss the ASHA recommendations for training of supervisors. Also to be discussed: providing
CEUs for Hearsay journals and posting of seminars that address supervision.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to identify current recommendations for training of supervisors.
  2. Participants will be able to identify current resources for training in the area of supervision.
  3. Participants will be able to identify action steps needed to resolve priority issues

Caucus Facilitator:

  • Nadine Ocock-Whiteman, M.A., CCC-SLP is a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. She began employment in 1996 at OSU as a Clinical Supervisor for graduate students at the Ohio State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Prior to OSU, her employment included inpatient hospitals, and non-profit community clinics, which serviced home health, preschools, and extended care facilities. She has over 25 years of experience serving individuals of all ages with a variety of communication disorders. Particular areas of interest include pediatric speech sound disorder intervention; literacy intervention; accent modification; and corporate speech instruction.

Telehealth Caucus: Telehealth 101. Essential Steps for Adding Telehealth to Your Practice

Learning Level: Introductory Content

Course Abstract: We will discuss the basic issues that need to be considered before providing services through telehealth. Identification of patient needs, state licensure requirements, equipment needed by the professional and by the parent, HIPAA compliant platform and patient and staff satisfaction will be discussed.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to  explain how state licensure law impacts telehealth.
  2. Participants will be able to describe the technology needed to provide services via telehealth.
  3. Participants will be able to describe features of telehealth compliant platforms.

Caucus Facilitator:

  • Wendy Steuerwald, Au.D., is a clinical program manager and pediatric audiologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Wendy is a member of the audiology telehealth team and is looking for opportunities to expand telehealth throughout Ohio.

STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATION CONTEST SUBMISSIONS:

  • All student posters submitted for the convention will be considered for the Student Poster Contest unless you specify otherwise.  In order to participate in the Contest, however, the poster and video presentation MUST be pre-submitted by the deadlines below.
  • PowerPoint Slide or Draft Image of your Poster is to be produced and submitted by email to oslhaprogram@ohioslha.org, and a short presentation of your poster videotaped and uploaded by you to YouTube for judging by February 1st, 2019
  • Presentation may be given by the lead presenter or the group.  Consider who your strongest presenter(s) is/are!
  • Additional information and guidelines for the presentation will be sent to the lead presenter and faculty advisor, once the poster proposal has been approved.
  • Poster content, aesthetics, and student presentation will all be considered when selecting winners.
  • Poster feedback will be provided to lead presenters for consideration/implementation when they present for our attendees at our annual convention (see below).
  • First Place: $100; Second Place: $50; Third Place: $25 awards will be presented to the lead student on winning poster presentations.
  • Winners will be announced at the poster displays Saturday, March 9th at 3:30 p.m. in the Morrow Meeting Room on Floor 2 of the Hyatt Regency in Columbus.

Student Poster Contest and Video Submission Details

OSLHA STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATION CONTEST GUIDELINES

Contest Entry:

  • All student posters accepted for the 2019 OSLHA Annual Convention are eligible to participate in the Student Poster Presentation Contest.
  • In order to participate in the Contest, students must PRE-SUBMIT a picture of their posters, along with a short video presentation (see below).
    • Upload your video to YouTube
    • Prepare a PowerPoint slide or Draft Image of you Poster so that the judges can see the actual poster clearly.
    • Email this image and the link to your YouTube video to oslhaprogram@ohioslha.org by February 1, 2019.
  • Only poster presentations which are submitted by the deadline will be considered for the contest.
  • The deadline for video submission and Poster image for entry in the contest, is February 1, 2019.

Contest Judging:

  • Poster presentations will be judged by a panel of professionals in speech-language pathology and audiology, and may include both university faculty and professionals in the field.
  • Judging and scoring will include both the poster and the video presentation.
  • Poster content, aesthetics (both poster and video), and the student presentation will all be considered when selecting winners.
  • Feedback from the judges will be provided to the lead presenter for each poster participating in the contest, for consideration/implementation during the live presentations at the convention.
  • Monetary awards will be presented to the lead student on each of the winning poster presentations: $100 First Place, $50 Second Place, and $25 Third Place
  • Winners will be announced and awards presented during the convention: Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. in the Morrow Meeting Room (site of Poster Displays).

Guidelines for Video Presentations:

  • Remember that a portion of the scoring/judging is on the actual poster and content – so it is extremely important to send us the picture of the poster. Likewise, it is important that the picture (slide or image) be clear and easily readable for the judges.  The poster portion of the judging will be scored accordingly, for any posters which are difficult to see or read.
  • Presentation Audio:
    • Be sure the sound quality is good – the judges need to be able to clearly hear your presentation
    • Consider wearing a microphone for best audio
    • Please DO NOT include any music with your video, as this can distort or mask the sound quality. These should be viewed as professional presentations – and it is highly unlikely that you would be playing music if doing a live presentation.
    • If not using a microphone – be cautious of your movements. For example, moving/rattling sheets of paper may interfere with the audio; or turning away from the camera to point to something on the poster may result in poor audio while your back is to the camera.
    • Speak slowly and clearly! It is important that the judges be able to clearly understand your presentation.
  • Presentation Video:
    • We want to see YOU! Be sure that you are visible on the recording, and your head is not cut off on the video.
    • Do not add any visual effects to the presentation.
    • Should be single-shot – no editing, effects, transitions, music, etc. added (this is not a contest for video production, but for the presentation of your poster and content knowledge).
  • General Tips:
    • Plan, Prepare, and Practice!! (Just like you would do for a live presentation)
    • Reading directly from note cards is highly discouraged, as it does not look professional.
    • Brush up on your presentation skills, if needed – in the past, contest scores were either helped or hindered by students’ presentation skills. Rehearse with other people, and solicit their feedback.  Take advantage of resources at your university to help with the speaking and presentation.
    • Try to be natural, and be yourself!
  • Maximum length of video = 8 minutes

One semester hour of graduate credit is available through Ashland University. Registration will take place at the Ashland University table in our exhibit hall on Friday, March 8 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM.

Convention FAQ's

Q: Can anyone submit a call for papers submission and do I need to fill in the information and submit it electronically?

 A: We invite all professionals in the speech, speech science and audiology fields to submit research or therapy-focused professional content for our consideration.  We also welcome and encourage submissions from presenters in related fields; professional, ethics, business, management, billing/coding, supervision, technology, OT, PT and more… Opportunities also exist for poster submissions from students in the speech, speech science and audiology fields of study!  All submissions must be made using the submission forms available on our website and all the fields are required.  Any questions should be directed to us via the contact avenues on our website.

Q: Can I Obtain OSLHA Membership and then Register Online for Convention at the OSLHA Member Rate?

 A: Yes!  You are welcome to join OSLHA for the first time or renew your membership online and then proceed immediately to register for convention online and take advantage of the discounted convention pricing offered only to OSLHA members.

 

Q: How Can I Pay for My Convention Registration?

 A: We gladly accept payment for registrations a number of different ways.  Attendees are now required to create a user account on our website and logging in to this user account will be required to conduct any purchases, including convention registration. After completing the online registration form you can proceed to submit your form and pay by credit card or you can select to “pay by check” and print your completed registration form for mailing with a personal check, business check, employer check or money order.  **Remember to mail any Early Bird check payments postmarked by the Early Bird date!

Q: How Can I Register for Convention and Have My Employer Make the Payment?

 A: We gladly accept payment for registrations a number of different ways.  Attendees are now required to create a user account on our website and logging in to this user account will be required to conduct any purchases, including convention registration.  Logging in allows you access to your past purchase history and receipts!  An interested attendee can login and complete a convention registration and proceed to the payment options, at that time choosing the “Pay by Check” option to submit the registration and print a copy of the registration form for passing along to an employer for making payment.  Employers can use that paper form to locate details and remit payment to us by check or can call us to make payment by credit card.  Your employer may also be willing to connect their financial contact with you when you reach the end of your online registration, entering credit card payment information for you, therefore, allowing you to submit the form and payment online together.  We support any of these options.

Q: Are There Options for a Reduced Cost to Attend the OSLHA Convention?

 A: The OSLHA Legislative Council has taken great care to ensure our convention attendance pricing is consistent with the going rates at other similar conventions across the nation.  We also exercise diligence in the spending of convention income to ensure we provide the highest quality presentations, activities and meals possible despite pricing increases and economic factors beyond our control.  Because of this careful planning, we are currently able to provide single day registration options to our professional attendees to meet the needs of those unable to take time away from work, whose employers no longer provide Continuing Education funding and those experiencing financial hardships that keep them from full convention attendance and participation.  We expect to continue to offer single day registration options whenever possible.

 

Q: When Can I Gain Access To View/Print Course Handouts?

 A: Handouts will be submitted by our speakers approximately 2 weeks prior to the convention start date.  Handouts will then be formatted and made available on your personal agenda in the convention attendee portal at www.oslha2go.org, as quickly as possible.  We will also email all of our registrants with a notification when handouts are posted to make accessing and printing your needed handouts as easy as possible.

 

Q: Why Are There Less Exhibitors Than I Remember in Past Years?

 A: The appearance may be that there are less exhibitors because of the new convention venue but the reality is that we continue to sell approximately the same number of exhibit spaces consistently for the last several years.  Many of our exhibitors now also support OSLHA as advertisers and sponsors of events and activities when they do not have the staffing available to man an exhibit booth.  We contact thousands of potential exhibitors annually but many are bound by financial, staffing and scheduling constraints and some may simply choose not to attend our event if they feel our attendees are not interested in their products or services.   The best way to ensure a large number and variety of exhibitors attend OSLHA is for YOU to contact them to inquire about their attendance!   You can reach out to many of your favorite companies online or use the contact information in our annual convention exhibitor directory included in your convention registration folder to contact this year’s attending exhibitors to thank them for their attendance.  Please be sure to visit all of the exhibit booths and thank them personally when you see them in attendance, as well.  If they feel welcome it is more likely they will return to our event next year!

Q: Why Are There So Many Recruiters Exhibiting?

A: The economy and hiring patterns of many exhibitors may affect their attendance so you may see more recruiters on years when they are actively hiring SLP’s or Audiologists in this region.  An increase in recruiters is a sign of increased employment opportunities in our region and we are excited this is the case!

Q: Why Has LinguaSystems Not Exhibited Recently?

A: Linguasystems implemented a policy in 2011 to exhibit only at National events.  It is costly to purchase exhibit space, ship products and exhibit materials and pay for booth staff members’ travel, meals and hotel accommodations.  Many corporate partners continue to support the state associations by making generous scholarship donations and they often advertise or sponsor events/activities at our convention.  For the foreseeable future, we don’t expect them to host an exhibit booth at our state convention.

Q:Why Are We Again Required To Collect Attendance Codes During The OSLHA Convention Courses/Activities?

A: As you may have experienced at other independent CE activities, ASHA requires approved CE providers, such as OSLHA, to have a validation process in place to verify attendance.  Due to the large number of attendees at our convention, reviewing course sign-in sheets for individual attendance is not an effective method of attendance verification.  Therefore, we instead use a reliable process of providing attendance codes, which integrates nicely with our existing online attendance system and allows us to get your certificate of attendance and ASHA/AAA registries updated very shortly after our event concludes.  We do hope that the inconvenience of codes will be offset by the efficiency of receiving your proof of attendance more quickly and accurately!
