OUTSTANDING LEGISLATORS
Award History

This award, given by the Ohio Speech and Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition (OSHGAC) recognizes an Ohio Legislator for contributions which have or will affect our profession in the area of communicative disorders. This legislator's work will have far-reaching effects in a positive manner to not only the speech and hearing impaired but the general public.

OSHGAC Announces 2009 Legislator of the Year Recipient:
Senator Capri Cafaro

The Ohio Speech and Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition (OSHGAC) is pleased to announce that Senator Capri Cafaro (Rep. 32nd District) has been chosen as the 2009 OSHGAC Legislator of the Year.  This award, given annually by the OSHGAC recognizes an Ohio Legislator for contributions which have or will affect our profession in the area of communicative disorders. The legislator's work should have far-reaching effects in a positive manner to not only the speech and hearing impaired but the general public.  Senator Cafaro has been a tireless advocate for reforming and revitalizing the healthcare deliver system in Ohio.  She recently worked with the OSHGAC and other healthcare provider groups to understand and advocate for improvements to the Medicaid Managed Care system in Ohio.  Her focus on issues related to health care and education are shared with speech and hearing professionals across the state. Senator Cafaro was presented with this most deserving award by Erin L. Miller, Chair of the OSHGAC at the Annual OSHGAC Legislative Breakfast on March 18, 2009 in the State House Atrium.

Senator Carfaro represents the 32nd Senate District and is the youngest woman ever to serve in the Ohio State Legislature.  In 2009, she became the Minority Leader after serving as Assistant Minority Whip for the Senate.  She is recognized for her advocacy of health care related legislation.

“From Medicaid program challenges, to issues with under-reimbursement, to school staffing shortages, the challenges facing persons with speech and hearing disabilities are many,” said Senator Cafaro.  “As a legislator, it’s my job to be a strong advocate for programs and services that improve the overall quality of life for persons with speech and hearing impairments,” Senator Cafaro concluded. “That is exactly what I intend to do.”
