Award History
This award, given by the Ohio Speech and
Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition (OSHGAC) recognizes an Ohio Legislator for
contributions which have or will affect our profession in the area of
communicative disorders. This legislator's work will have far-reaching
effects in a positive manner to not only the speech and hearing impaired but
the general public.
OSHGAC Announces 2009 Legislator of the Year Recipient:
Senator Capri Cafaro

The Ohio Speech and
Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition (OSHGAC) is pleased to
announce that Senator Capri Cafaro (Rep. 32nd District)
has been chosen as the 2009 OSHGAC Legislator of the Year. This
award, given annually by the OSHGAC recognizes an Ohio Legislator
for contributions which have or will affect our profession in the
area of communicative disorders. The legislator's work should have
far-reaching effects in a positive manner to not only the speech and
hearing impaired but the general public. Senator Cafaro has been a
tireless advocate for reforming and revitalizing the healthcare
deliver system in Ohio. She recently worked with the OSHGAC and
other healthcare provider groups to understand and advocate for
improvements to the Medicaid Managed Care system in Ohio. Her focus
on issues related to health care and education are shared with
speech and hearing professionals across the state.
Senator Cafaro was presented with this most deserving
award by Erin L. Miller, Chair of the OSHGAC at the Annual OSHGAC
Legislative Breakfast on March 18, 2009 in the State House Atrium.
Senator Carfaro represents the 32nd
Senate District and is the youngest woman ever to serve in the Ohio
State Legislature. In 2009, she became the Minority Leader after
serving as Assistant Minority Whip for the Senate. She is
recognized for her advocacy of health care related legislation.
“From Medicaid program challenges, to
issues with under-reimbursement, to school staffing shortages, the
challenges facing persons with speech and hearing disabilities are
many,” said Senator Cafaro. “As a legislator, it’s my job to be a
strong advocate for programs and services that improve the overall
quality of life for persons with speech and hearing impairments,”
Senator Cafaro concluded. “That is exactly what I intend to do.”
