Who are Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists?

AUDIOLOGISTS:

Audiologists are professionals that specialize in evaluation and treatment of people with hearing loss. They hold Masters (M.A./ M.S.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees or Clinical Doctorates (AuD), from accredited universities, with specific training in assessing the hearing of infants, children and adults. Audiologists conduct a wide variety of tests to determine the exact nature of an individual's hearing problem. They administer tests of hearing sensitivity, auditory perception, balance to evaluate dizziness, provide hearing rehabilitation training, and identify necessary assistive listening systems. Audiologists in Ohio are also licensed to select, fit and analyze hearing aids and their benefit for patients whom hearing aids are appropriate.

SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS:

Speech-Language Pathologists are professionals that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with communication problems. They hold Masters (M.A./M.S.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees from accredited universities with specific training in the assessment of speech production, language use, and the oral structure in adults, children and infants. The Speech-Language Pathologists administer a variety of tests to identify if communication problems exist. They also design the most appropriate treatment plan for the individual with a communication issue. Communication problems include the following disorders: fluency/stuttering, vocal/voice, speech, swallowing issues, and receptive or expressive language.
