Consumer Award
2006

The Consumer Award was presented to the following at the OSLHA Awards Luncheon at the 2006 Convention:

The OSLHA Consumer Award is to recognize either consumers who are successfully coping with communicative disabilities or advocates who have promoted the right of persons with communication handicaps.  The recipient of the 2006 Consumer Award is:

Becky Brown

Becky Brown, from Cleveland OH, was presented at the Awards Luncheon at the 2006 OSLHA convention as the 2006 Consumer Award winner. Becky was nominated by Dee Laurence and the clinical staff from the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Cleveland State University.  Becky is the mother of Emily, who is 6. Emily communicates with a combination of signs, a “hip-talker” and the Picture Exchange Communication System.

Becky was nominated because of her tireless work in helping Emily communicate. She became an effective signer.  She was tenacious in her search for an augmentative communication device. When funding was unavailable to purchase a device, Becky found one on e-bay! She also attended a Boardmaker workshop to learn about more options for the device.  The nominators added that “underlying all her efforts are her positive attitude and good humor.” Congratulations, Becky!
