 OSLHA Non-profit Caucus 3/10/07

1)      Participants were encouraged to complete ASHA survey about CPT codes.  Deadline is March 16th.

2)      Recruiting ideas:

·        Get on advisory committee for the universities

·        Students are using the web to find employers

·        Speak or have contact with NSSHLA

·        Youngstown has had some luck with hiring student from Pennsylvania

·        Rehabilitation companies are very aggressive with recruiting and we need to set up our efforts

·        Have someone on your staff follow up with potential candidates

·        After Director goes over basics and interviews, they leave and have staff have lunch and answer questions

·        OCSHA (Ohio Council of Speech Hearing Administrators), which represent nonprofits throughout the state, may want to consider doing a panel at OSHLA

·        We need to recognize the traits and impact of “Generation Y” and use that information in our recruitment and retention efforts

3)      We had some discussion on Multilingual:

Some are referring to Head Start for 3-5 year olds then Head Start can refer to public schools.

ASHA standards: To provide assessment and remediation services in the minority language, it is recommended that the speech-language pathologist or audiologist possess the following competencies:

·      Language Proficiency: Native or near native fluency in both the minority language and the English language.

·      Normative Processes: Ability to describe the process of normal speech and language acquisition for both bilingual and monolingual individuals; and how those processes are manifested in oral and written language.

·      Assessment: Ability to administer and interpret formal and informal assessment procedures to distinguish between communication difference and communication disorders.

·      Intervention: Ability to apply intervention strategies for treatment of communication disorders in the minority language.

·      Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to recognize cultural factors, which affect the delivery of speech language pathology and audiology services to minority language-speaking community.

4)      CFY Mentors can obtain .5 CEU for providing CF supervision- see ASHA web site for specifics

5)      We had some discussion on the ODE/OMNIE new initiative in the recruitment of school based SLP’s.  Complete information is available on the OMNIE website: www.omnie.org.  This initiative has taken a tremendous effort and has it merits.  Some concerns were voiced.  This initiative will require some actions by the Ohio Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology to ensure students in the schools receive high quality services.  Input can be directed to Mike Setty at the Ohio Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology.
